Finally! The Celiac Safety Act (H.R. 9048) has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (MO) and Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN). If passed, this bill would expand the list of major food allergens to cover all gluten-containing grains, not just wheat, requiring clear labeling on all food products that contain these grains.
This is a very big deal for Gluten-Free consumers. We have lobbied for years to get ALL Gluten containing grains called out on product labels. Current labeling only requires that wheat be listed, leaving out other gluten-containing.

An estimated 3 million Americans have celiac disease, a serious autoimmune disease where consuming the protein gluten (found in wheat, barley, and rye) causes the immune system to attack the lining of the small intestine. The only current treatment is adherence to a strict gluten-free diet.
While the FDA requires manufacturers to list wheat as a major allergen, this does not account for other gluten-containing grains like barley and rye. This is unlike Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, and all 27 member states of the European Union, all of which require manufacturers to list gluten as a major allergen. As a result, Americans with celiac disease often face significant difficulty determining whether packaged foods are safe to consume. This regularly leads to accidental gluten exposure, prolonged illness, intestinal damage, nutritional deficiencies, and other serious complications.
The Celiac Safety Act would mark significant progress in labeling practices for U.S. food products, strengthening transparency and helping Americans make safe food choices with confidence.
