After years of requests from our Gluten-Free Community, the FDA has agreed to revisit information about current Gluten-Free labeling rule that was instituted in 2013. This is great news for those of us living with Celiac Disease and gluten-related disorders.
Updating the Gluten-Free Labeling rule would result clearer labeling for consumers who rely on accurate labeling. I am excited!!!
In 2013, I was on the National Board of Celiac Disease Foundation. Along with other organizations, CDF lobbied to get Gluten added to the list of allergens to be included to the food labeling law. While they finally added wheat, somehow, they neglected the other gluten-containing grains: Rye & Barley.
Finally the FDA has agreed to take another look at Gluten-Free labeling. This follows a 2023 citizen petition from Celiac Journey, an education group dedicated to raising awareness about Celiac Disease. The group’s founder, Jonathan Bari, expressed concern about current Gluten-Free labeling.
The petition specifically asks that all gluten sources, including wheat, rye, barley and oats (that might have been cross-contaminated oats during manufacturing) be clearly listed on product labels and that gluten be added to the major allergen list.

I’ll repost updates as they become available.
